First: choose for your purpose

EPS is a PostScript-based interchange format that can contain vectors and raster images. Illustrator editing differs from Photoshop rasterization. Do not assume normal browser display; use PDF for viewing where appropriate.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows / macOS: Illustrator opening

Opening and placing are different operations.

  1. Open a copy for editing; inspect Place when inserting into another document.
  2. Inspect text, paths, links and effects; unknown-producer features may not be fully preserved.
  3. Save editing separately as AI or another appropriate format and retain EPS.
Photoshop: rasterize deliberately

Rasterization changes vector editability.

  1. Open a copy in Photoshop and review rasterization settings.
  2. Choose required dimensions, resolution and color settings and inspect any embedded raster quality.
  3. Export separately, such as PNG, and inspect edges, text and background.
Mobile / reading: request PDF

A reader can request an author-made viewing copy.

  1. Request PDF/PNG with the required artwork and size.
  2. Inspect text, color, clipping and background in the copy.
  3. If EPS is required for print, confirm format, font and color conditions with the printer.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Tiny preview only: the viewer may be showing an embedded preview instead of interpreting the artwork.
  • Changed transparent effects: EPS may require flattening; compare with the original AI/PDF.
  • Missing resources: ask how fonts and images were supplied; check output before substituting.
  • Background/shadows change: inspect EPS transparency limits/flattening and request an appropriate PDF from the editing master.
  • Coarse image: EPS may contain low-resolution raster content; a vector-capable format cannot add photo detail.
  • Geometry differs: import may discard unsupported information; compare EPS with a PDF reference.

EPS → PDF / SVG / PNG

  1. Open in compatible authoring software and export PDF/SVG when vector preservation is appropriate.
  2. For raster output, export at the required resolution and inspect fine lines, text and color.
  3. Inspect dimensions, edges, text, color, alpha regions and embedded images.

A raster-only EPS does not become editable vector geometry simply by exporting SVG.

Opening for editing versus placing artwork

Opening imports into application objects; placing uses EPS as artwork within another document. Choose by purpose and inspect unsupported features.

Request an alternate export from the source app when effects/editing information are unsupported.

Information lost on rasterization

PNG/JPEG fixes pixel count and removes original text/path-object editing; decide dimensions and retain the master.

Check alpha, process/spot colors and output requirements; format support alone does not guarantee identical fonts/effects.

Handling and security

EPS contains PostScript rather than only pixels. Verify its origin and process unfamiliar files with updated compatible software.

Questions and answers

Can every EPS scale without pixelation?

Vector parts can scale, but embedded raster imagery remains resolution-dependent.

Does Photoshop import editable vector paths from EPS?

It normally rasterizes the artwork; use appropriate vector-authoring software for editing.

Are EPS and AI equivalent?

No; they preserve different effects and editing information.

Is every EPS purely vector?

It may contain raster images; inspect objects and image resolution.

Does Photoshop opening preserve vector editing?

Typical EPS import rasterizes; use a vector app for the original geometry.
