Inventor part

CAD & 3D

IPT is an Inventor part with geometry, features and parameters. Older versions may not edit newer files natively. Distinguish AnyCAD references from full native editing and check version/update requirements before choosing exchange formats.

Example: a practical checking sequence

Example: a supplied IPT reports a newer version. Communicate receiving version/update level and required editing scope. AnyCAD reference support does not imply full history editing. Request suitable geometry exchange when needed and verify units and dimensions.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Open in compatible Inventor

Check source version and update level.

  1. Copy the source and required dependencies.
  2. Open in Inventor and inspect features and warnings.
  3. Check units, parameters and geometry and save separately.
Transfer to older Inventor or another CAD app

Reference import is distinct from full editing.

  1. Tell the author the receiving version and editing requirements.
  2. Check documented AnyCAD conditions or neutral export options.
  3. Verify geometry, dimensions, units and available editing behavior.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Newer-version warning: check compatibility and required updates.
  • Missing feature tree: check whether the file was imported as reference or neutral geometry.
  • Missing dependencies: inspect project settings and reference paths.
  • Different dimensions: compare units and receiving interpretation.
  • Coarse STL: adjust mesh settings on a copy and retain the native part.

IPT → STEP / STL

  1. Inspect source units and geometry.
  2. Export suitable STEP geometry or mesh output such as STL.
  3. Verify dimensions, faces and required details in the receiving application.

STEP and STL do not preserve identical native feature history; retain IPT for future design changes.

AnyCAD is not native backward saving

Supported AnyCAD workflows reference newer geometry; they do not imply full native feature editing or native backward saving.

Document version requirements

The product name alone is insufficient; document producing/receiving versions, updates and editing needs.

  • Distinguish viewing from parameter editing.
  • Verify neutral geometry and units.
  • Check whether drawings or assemblies are also needed.

Questions and answers

Can renaming make it an older file?

No; use documented compatibility or export.

Does AnyCAD preserve full native editing?

Reference geometry and feature editing differ.

Is STEP editing equivalent?

Native history and parameters may not be retained.

Should I send IPT for printing?

Check required formats and export a suitable mesh if needed.

What should I verify after conversion?

Units, dimensions, faces, holes and required detail.
