Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Mbox-capable mail software such as Apple Mail

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open the application’s mailbox import tool.
  2. Choose mbox or Apple Mail according to the exporter.
  3. Locate the imported local mailbox.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Identify producer and whether the item is a file or directory.
  2. Keep the entire export including attachment data.
  3. Record message count and date range.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Too few messages: check selected input and subfolders.
  • Attachments absent: check source download/export completeness.
  • Garbled text: inspect source encoding and display settings.
  • Duplicates: check the existing imported mailbox before repeating.

MBOX → imported mailbox

  1. Import the mailbox, then separately save needed individual messages as EML/PDF.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

Folders, labels, rules and account settings require separate checks.

Distinguish archive and server sync

Local import does not necessarily restore messages to the server. Consider duplication and quota before moving them into a shared account.
