Apple Mail Message

EMLX stores an Apple Mail message with a byte-count prefix and metadata. Renaming to EML is not proper conversion; check import and attachment completeness separately.

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Preserve a copy of the whole source Mail folder.
  2. Check whether Mail can display the individual copy.
  3. For bulk migration, inspect Mail’s Apple Mail import route.

  2. Check for separately stored attachments.
  3. Do not edit active library files directly.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Only text elsewhere: display in Mail and export EML.
  • Attachment missing: inspect source download state and companion data.
  • Not in the inbox: distinguish viewing from mailbox import.
  • Search mismatch: test copies instead of hand-editing active indexes.

EMLX → EML / PDF

  1. From Mail, save Raw Message Source for EML, or export/print PDF.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

PDF does not preserve attachment payloads or every original header.

EML and EMLX have different structures

Readable text is not a reason to trim the prefix/trailer by hand; byte boundaries and encodings matter. Use the application’s export route first.
