Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

MHTML-capable browser such as Edge

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open a copy through a compatible browser’s file-opening command.
  2. Check the capture date, original URL, text and images.
  3. For a reading copy, inspect the print preview and page range.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. The .mht suffix is related, but plain HTML has a different structure.
  2. Identify parts that still require network access or login.
  3. Compare the capturing and receiving browser versions.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Raw text appears: open inside a supporting browser.
  • Images missing: request a new capture after the original finishes loading.
  • Login fails: use the live site rather than expecting archived authentication.
  • Print cropped: check scale, paper and margins.

MHTML → PDF

  1. Print the opened snapshot to a separate PDF.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

PDF does not preserve live forms, all link behavior or later site updates.

Establish the capture boundary

Inspect figures, table endings and collapsed content rather than assuming the visible browser state was captured completely.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: for an application receipt, verify the reference number and date and retain the private original locally.
