First: choose for your purpose
ODT is an editable document commonly used in Writer. Word can handle some ODT files with feature differences. Separate the ODT master from delivered DOCX/PDF copies to track conversion changes.
Opening steps
Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.
Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Overflowing text can indicate missing fonts. Ask for font names or a reference PDF.
- ODF and Office support different features. Keep the original and check missing content in Writer.
- If a phone offers no suitable app, verify ODT support or ask the sender for a PDF.
- Apparently blank: inspect view, zoom and text color, then compare another ODF-capable app; size alone is not proof of validity.
- Password required: confirm document encryption with its author; renaming cannot remove it.
- Repeated format prompts: check the current and destination formats; separate a DOCX delivery copy from the ODT master.
ODT → DOCX / PDF
- For editing, use Writer’s Save As and choose a Word format to create a separate DOCX.
- For viewing, export as PDF and check page breaks, tables and images.
- Reopen DOCX/PDF copies and compare page count, contents, footnotes and tables.
DOCX conversion may alter styles/layout. A PDF is not a substitute for editing the original paragraph structure.
Checking a Word round trip
ODT→DOCX can change columns, shapes, contents and revision handling. Agree on essential features before repeated application switching.
Compare heading hierarchy, tables, notes and print output in both formats, with PDF as an appearance reference.

PDF delivery and editable masters
Use Writer’s Export as PDF with the intended page range, then check count, links and searchable text.
PDF alone is insufficient when editing is required; confirm the requested format before choosing DOCX or ODT.

Documents may contain macros or external references. Do not enable unknown macros; review comments and tracked changes before sharing.
Questions and answers
Does renaming ODT to DOCX convert it?
No. Open it in a compatible application and save in DOCX format.
Can I edit it without buying Office?
LibreOffice Writer can edit ODT; check special features created by other applications.
How should I communicate the intended print layout?
Provide a reference PDF alongside the editable original and compare pagination and graphics.
Does opening ODT make it a Word document?
Opening alone does not change the original; distinguish saved copies from the master.
Does PDF export remove my editable source?
The PDF is a delivery copy; your retained ODT remains editable.
