Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Microsoft PowerPoint desktop

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Exit the show if necessary and open a copy from inside PowerPoint.
  2. Inspect slide thumbnails, notes and linked videos.
  3. Keep macros disabled until trust is established and save an editing copy.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Establish whether the task is viewing, editing or presentation automation.
  2. Check whether media and fonts are embedded or external.
  3. Plan a test on the actual PowerPoint version and display equipment.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Cannot reach editing view: use Open within PowerPoint.
  • Macros blocked: check the sender and organizational policy.
  • Video fails: inspect linked files, codecs and playback environment.
  • Text differs on another PC: inspect fonts and substitutions.

PPSM → PPSX / PPTX / PDF / video

  1. Export a macro-free format, PDF or video according to the task and verify slide appearance.
  2. Check slide order, treatment of notes, media, links and presentation timing.

PPSX/PPTX cannot retain VBA; PDF/video do not preserve interactive workflows or editing information.

A slide show is not a video

PPSM behavior can depend on clicks, macros and links. Video export requires timing decisions and does not preserve freely interactive execution.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: for training materials, decide whether PDF or video is sufficient. For button-driven lessons, ask the author about required environments and alternative deliverables.
