Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows / Mac: PowerPoint

Open the legacy format before assessing compatibility.

  1. Open a copy of the PPT through File → Open in PowerPoint.
  2. Review Protected View and macro warnings; inspect slides without enabling editing or code unnecessarily.
  3. For editing, save separately in a suitable current format and recheck notes, video and animation.
Free application: inspect in Impress

Compare rendering with the original.

  1. Load the PPT using Open in LibreOffice Impress.
  2. Check slide count and look for substituted fonts or overflowing text.
  3. Save separately and compare with a PDF reference from the original application.
Web / mobile: viewing and conversion

Legacy-format editing varies by service.

  1. Import into a compatible service or app after checking confidentiality.
  2. Check whether it supports viewing only or requires a PPTX copy.
  3. Download the converted file and test it on the presentation device.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Missing playback may involve separately linked media; ask for the complete source set.
  • Check font substitution for moved text. Screenshots cannot validate animations.
  • Only video fails: determine whether it is embedded or linked and obtain linked media.
  • Macro requirement: distinguish viewing from automation; plain PPTX will not preserve VBA macros.
  • Legacy appearance changes: compare compatibility mode, fonts and shape effects in the source and converted copy.

PPT → PPTX

  1. Use Save As → PPTX in PowerPoint under a new name.
  2. Compare the two slideshows, including media and timing.
  3. Reopen the saved copy and check presenter notes, linked assets and playback sequence.

Review warnings for legacy objects/macros. PDF is for static pages, not a substitute for animations/audio.

Legacy PPT macros and conversion

PPT is a legacy binary format; its suffix does not establish whether macros exist. Confirm a suitable macro-capable destination when preservation is required.

Review presenter notes and the slide show after editing; the editing view alone can hide playback differences.

Pre-presentation checks

On the actual device, test fonts, aspect ratio, sound, video and click order; prepare a static PDF if useful.

Check linked video and online resources before presenting without internet access.

Questions and answers

Why is a video missing?

A linked media file may be missing. Request the original presentation set.

Does PDF preserve animations?

Ordinary slide PDFs are static. Validate the slideshow separately.

Can I just rename PPT to PPTX?

No. Save through a compatible presentation application.

Can I rename PPT to PPTX?

The internal formats differ. Open it and choose the output format in an application.

Is PDF enough for a presentation?

It is useful for static handouts but does not preserve the same media, animation and presentation controls.
