Revit Family

CAD & 3D

RFA is a Revit loadable family containing geometry, types, parameters and a category. It differs from an RVT project; inspect both Family Editor behavior and the result after loading into a project.

Opening steps

Autodesk Revit Family Editor

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open a copy in a compatible Revit Family Editor.
  2. Inspect category, types and parameters.
  3. Load it into a test project and inspect placement and dimensional changes.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Compare producer and recipient releases.
  2. Identify required hosts and category.
  3. Check for existing families/types with the same names.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Cannot place: inspect host requirements.
  • Overwrite prompt: inspect changes to existing types and parameter values.
  • Older version rejects it: families also follow Revit version constraints.
  • Resizing fails: inspect constraints, formulas and reference planes with the author.

RFA → supported geometry export / project use

  1. Retain RFA for editing; use supported CAD export when the recipient needs geometry.
  2. Check type names, category, units, parameters and placement conditions.

Geometry export does not preserve equivalent types, parameters and hosting behavior.

Loaded families are not external links

Loading stores family data in the project. Editing the source RFA does not necessarily update every project; review overwrite choices during reload.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: test equipment types, connections, hosts and dimensions in a test model before production loading.

Questions and answers

Does RFA contain the whole building?

It is normally a reusable component, not the entire project.

Does editing RFA update every model?

It depends on reloading and overwrite settings in each project.

Is the source RFA needed after loading?

Data is stored in the project, but retain a separate RFA master for reuse/maintenance.
