Revit Project

CAD & 3D

RVT is a Revit project containing BIM elements, properties, views and sheets. Revit does not provide ordinary saving of a newer model to an earlier version; coordinate versions and central/local-model workflows.

Opening steps

Compatible Autodesk Revit version

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Identify the producer release and open a copy in that or a compatible newer release.
  2. Review upgrade notices, external links and worksharing status.
  3. Inspect required views, sheets and properties, then follow the project’s save workflow.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Agree on the Revit release and update level.
  2. Distinguish central, local and delivery copies.
  3. Inventory linked RVT/CAD files, images and paths.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Older Revit rejects it: newer models cannot simply be saved down.
  • Linked model absent: inspect its delivery and path.
  • Team cannot open after upgrade: coordinate the project version and migration workflow.
  • Sheets differ: inspect views, visibility, phases and link state.

RVT → IFC / DWG / PDF

  1. Export an agreed IFC for BIM exchange, DWG for drawings or PDF for viewing.
  2. Check coordinates, storeys, element counts, required properties and sheet extent at the recipient.

IFC/DWG exchange is not a lossless downgrade of the original Revit editing model.

Agree on release before opening

Saving after a newer-release upgrade can prevent return to the earlier workflow. Preserve the original and agree migration with the project manager, including linked models.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: when partners use different releases, establish master ownership, agree IFC version/properties and compare element count, placement and data in a trial export.

Questions and answers

Can RVT be downgraded?

Ordinary saving down is unsupported; importing an exchange format is not the identical native model.

How does RFA differ?

RVT is a project; RFA is a loadable family.

Does IFC recreate an earlier native Revit project?

It exchanges supported elements, not the full original editing model.
