SSA Subtitle

Subtitles & Captions

SSA stores timed text and styles, related to but distinct from ASS. It does not include the video. Preview with the intended video/fonts and check timing, appearance and placement. SRT export can lose styling/positioning.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Open SSA in a compatible editor

Inspect it as an older styled-subtitle format.

  1. Load a copy into Aegisub or another supported editor.
  2. Load the matching video edition.
  3. Preview fonts, placement and timing.
Save an ASS copy and compare

Retain original SSA after migration.

  1. Inspect imported styles and cue count.
  2. Save separately in supported ASS format.
  3. Compare styling/placement on representative and long lines.
Export simpler captions

Complex presentation may not survive.

  1. Inspect required text and timing.
  2. Export separately to SRT or another required format.
  3. Validate text, breaks and sync in the target player.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Garbled text: identify the source encoding before saving a copy.
  • Different font/position: check fonts and SSA-style support.
  • Timing mismatch: compare video edition, starting time and duration.
  • Placement differs: compare style handling and fonts.
  • ASS rendering changed: compare resolution, styles and overrides.
  • Missing glyphs: inspect font coverage and encoding.

SSA → ASS / SRT

  1. Preview in a compatible subtitle app against the intended video.
  2. Export separately and compare line breaks, all cues, timing and styling.
  3. Compare styles, cue count and synchronization with the original SSA.

SRT does not fully retain SSA styling; renaming does not resolve format differences.

Retain the original legacy data

Keep SSA so that changes introduced by import/migration can be compared.
