Legacy InDesign interchange

Creative Projects

INX is a legacy InDesign interchange format, distinct from current IDML and native INDD. Check compatible software, fonts, linked images and page reproduction when recovering older layouts; the INX alone may be insufficient.

Example: a practical checking sequence

Example: recover an old newsletter INX with its producing version, assets and reference PDF. Save a separate current document and compare fonts, paragraphs, images and pagination. Renaming to IDML is not migration, and successful import still requires proofing.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Open with compatible InDesign

Identify the producing version and receiving support.

  1. Copy INX with images and font information.
  2. Open in compatible InDesign and record warnings.
  3. Save a separate native document and compare every page with a reference.
When no compatible environment is available

Request a supported interchange file and visual reference.

  1. Ask the producer about compatible IDML or INDD output.
  2. Obtain linked images, font names and a reference PDF.
  3. Check overset text and missing links after import.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Cannot open: check legacy-version compatibility rather than assuming universal support.
  • Missing images: request the linked assets, which may not be embedded.
  • Overset text: check font substitution and composition differences.
  • Different colors or effects: check legacy-feature compatibility and output settings.
  • Renaming to IDML fails because actual conversion is required.

INX → current document / PDF

  1. Import in compatible InDesign and review warnings.
  2. Save appropriate native/interchange copies and export PDF for delivery.
  3. Compare every page and resolve overset text and missing assets.

Interchange does not guarantee identical reproduction; proof the PDF and linked assets before printing.

Distinguish interchange generations

Both serve interchange, but INX belongs to an older generation. Match receiving requirements to the producer’s export options.

Proof recovered pages

Opening is not print verification; compare imagery, text, paragraphs, page numbers and bleed against a reference.

  • Obtain fonts under proper licensing.
  • Do not substitute low-resolution previews for source images.
  • Retain the legacy original.
