Affinity Publisher Document

Creative Projects

AFPUB is an editable Affinity Publisher document containing pages, text frames and placed graphics. Linked assets/fonts may be needed separately, so the document alone may not provide a complete editing or print environment.

Opening steps

Compatible Affinity Publisher version

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open a copy in a Publisher version compatible with the producer.
  2. Inspect missing/modified assets in Resource Manager.
  3. Review preflight findings such as overflowing text and fonts, then save a copy.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Compare producer and recipient application versions.
  2. Inventory linked graphics, fonts and placed documents.
  3. Agree on print PDF, bleed and color requirements.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Images low-resolution/missing: inspect resource status and source location.
  • Text overflows: inspect font substitution, frame size and composition settings.
  • Older app cannot open it: ask about compatibility and a PDF alternative.
  • PDF page extent differs: inspect pages versus spreads and selected ranges.

AFPUB → PDF / complete handoff assets

  1. Export the required PDF after preflight; for editing handoff, check the application’s resource-collection/package facilities.
  2. Check PDF pages/spreads, bleed, text and image resolution.

PDF is not a full AFPUB editing substitute; resource and font distribution depends on usage terms.

Linked versus embedded resources

Linked resources remain external while embedded ones are stored in the document. Reconnect moved links to the correct original, checking against similarly named alternatives.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: collect linked graphics for a booklet transfer, then reopen on the receiving computer and check page count, overflow and resource status.

Questions and answers

Is sending AFPUB alone sufficient?

External resources/fonts may be needed; establish the recipient’s task.

Can PDF restore the same AFPUB?

It cannot reliably restore identical composition, links and editing structures.

Does embedding always reduce size?

Storing assets inside the document can increase size; choose based on dependency requirements.
