OpenDocument Drawing

Documents

ODG is the OpenDocument drawing format used by LibreOffice Draw. It preserves editable objects, text and pages. It serves a different purpose from a photo or word-processing document; use PDF or image export for distribution.

LibreOffice Draw

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open a copy in Draw and inspect the page list.
  2. Inspect object order, text and connectors before editing.
  3. Save an editable ODG copy and create distribution copies through export.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Check fonts and whether images are linked.
  2. Decide whether output should include all pages or selected objects.
  3. Check page dimensions for print and pixel dimensions for image delivery.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Text overflows: inspect substitute fonts and frame size.
  • Image disappears after moving: inspect linked-resource paths.
  • PNG contains one page: distinguish page-image export from a multipage PDF.
  • Objects cannot be edited: check whether the source was flattened to an image.

ODG → PDF / SVG / PNG

  1. Export PDF for document delivery, SVG for compatible vector exchange or PNG for screen use.
  2. Check page count, bounds, text readability, transparency and background color.

PNG flattens the drawing; SVG/PDF may not retain every Draw-specific editing structure.

Separate saving from export

Keep ODG as the editing master and manage exported PDF/images as recipient-specific deliverables. Page margins and selection affect output bounds.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: for a PNG organization chart, select the page and resolution, then check the smallest labels. Prepare a separate PDF when print is also required.

Questions and answers

How does it differ from ODT?

ODG is for drawings; ODT is for word processing.

How can I insert it as an image?

Export the required page or objects from Draw to PNG or another suitable image format.

Will image export include all pages?

Inspect selection/page export behavior; consider PDF for multipage delivery.
