Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

PowerPoint desktop

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Select a template copy inside PowerPoint.
  2. Establish whether you are editing the master or creating a deck.
  3. Ask the author about the environment before using macros.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Check fonts and slide masters.
  2. Review code provenance and organizational policy.
  3. Separate the POTM master and working presentation.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Macros fail: inspect dependencies without globally relaxing trust.
  • Buttons fail in a new deck: check where required code resides.
  • Code lost in PPTX: check the required macro-capable output.
  • Appearance differs: compare fonts and applied masters.

POTM → working deck / PDF

  1. Create a presentation and save/export in the format required by its use.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

PPTX cannot retain VBA; PDF does not retain deck editing or macros.

Check template design and automation separately

A correct slide master does not prove VBA/add-in compatibility; test platform dependencies separately.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: make one slide from a copy, inspect its title, graphics and numbering, then test required automation.
