First: choose for your purpose
PAGES is an Apple Pages document. Export DOCX in Pages for Word recipients or PDF for reading. A supported desktop browser with Pages for iCloud can offer a route without an Apple device.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Renaming PAGES to DOCX does not change the content; request an actual export.
- Layout and font differences can follow conversion. Compare editable DOCX against a reference PDF.
- Check browser compatibility, file size and completed upload; ask the author about passwords.
- Greyed-out file: verify the app and supported document type; Numbers/Keynote use different apps.
- More pages after conversion: inspect fonts, margins and table widths; include PDF when appearance matters.
- Opens in mail but not found locally: check the exported copy’s destination/sync and whether it is still PAGES.
PAGES → DOCX / PDF
- In Pages, use Share → Export and Send, or your version’s File export command, then choose Word/PDF.
- Save a separate file and check headers, tables, wrapping and page count.
- Compare exported page count, tables and fonts while retaining PAGES.
Some Pages features do not remain fully editable in DOCX. PDF does not preserve the native editing model.
Delivering an editable Word copy
Word export creates a separate copy. Keep PAGES while checking columns, tables, images and footnotes in DOCX.
You may share editable DOCX plus a PDF reference; agree on required formats and the master copy.

Preview images do not replace the document
An extracted preview image is not the editable document structure or necessarily every page. Renaming to ZIP is not a document conversion.
Request an export when cloud use is unavailable. Use permitted apps/storage for password-protected or business documents.
