Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Identify a viewer

The viewer can be an optional feature.

  1. Inspect availability of an XPS-compatible viewer.
  2. Check feature deployment on managed PCs.
  3. Open a copy with a supported viewer.
Inspect pages

Review print conditions as well.

  1. Inspect page count and orientation.
  2. Inspect text, graphics, margins and paper size.
  3. Inspect scaling/clipping in print preview.
Deliver as PDF

Inspect pages after conversion.

  1. Choose supported PDF export/printing.
  2. Save separately and reopen all pages.
  3. Inspect search, text and required links.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • No opener: check viewer installation, associations and optional features.
  • OXPS rejected: verify both format variants are supported.
  • Layout/printing differs: compare viewers and check paper size, scaling and font handling.
  • PDF clipping: inspect output paper/scaling.
  • No search: inspect text/image content and output handling.
  • Links missing: distinguish print conversion and supported export.

XPS → PDF

  1. Inspect pages in a trusted compatible viewer, then use supported PDF export or printing.
  2. Compare page count, orientation, text, graphics and margins before sharing.
  3. Compare PDF count, paper, text and graphics with the XPS.

Print conversion may lose links/document information and does not recreate the editable original.

Fixed layout versus editing

Separate viewing from editing and do not assume authoring structure is preserved.

Example: review each orientation in a mixed-portrait/landscape document.
